Meeting Notes- 2/3/16
2/3/16:
- Submit your proposal soon.
- Long term plan:
- Podcast is the way to go (attractive to market, versatile)
- brand it- cutting edge of healthcare (not mere CST discussion)
- must be entertaining
- We need a community of 30-40 students with basic knowledge (public health, policy, and CST) who will write, connect with pros for interviews, must include faculty members.
- community vs network -people who know each other, already have strong foundation.
- Plant communities, see what emerges at uvu, BYU- west, crookston, barnes, UoU.
Short term game plan:
- this semester: one page summary- “start with the why”, who we are and what we’re about.
- 5-10 points- challenge status quo, connect, ask tough questions (what are the tough questions? -midlevels, prevention vs curative, medical curriculum), foster emergence.
- Summer- take those ideas and put them into website…
- fall- plant the ideas at each university and see what emerges.
Long term goal- REALLY HIGH QUALITY PODCAST in 3 or so years.
Ideas: “health systems studies” would need a champion on campus.

African Health Initiative
The Doris Duke Foundation is leading the way in global health on the ground in considering applications of complexity in health.
The African Health Initiative was created by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation in 2007. Below is their mission statement found on their website.
“The African Health Initiative (AHI) seeks to catalyze significant advances in strengthening health systems by supporting partnerships that will design, implement and evaluate large-scale models of care that link implementation research and workforce training directly to the delivery of integrated primary healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa.”
They currently have partnerships in five countries:

Meeting Notes from January 15th
For those of you who could not make the meeting yesterday, this is what you missed:
- The systems thinking revolution has potential to be as impactful as the abolitionist movement was. Read “Bury the Chains”, and watch “Amazing Grace”.
- “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has”- Margaret Mead.
- We hope that, by strengthening the CST network, we will have a lasting impact on the world.
- Some resources for study-
- Atul Gawande- “making systems work” and BBC’s “century of the system”.
- David Bishai on “wicked problems” and “collective impact”.
- Helen Bevan’s tweets.
- Hand-washing and briefly saved lives- NPR. Remember that HOW we approach affecting change matters. Ignaz Semmelweis knew WHAT to change, but may not have known HOW . We need both. Be tactful and diplomatic.
- Dr. Swanson will act as a “guide on the side, not a sage on the stage”. Students need to take initiative, be proactive.
- Vision: Make an exceptional, significant, historic impact in the way the world views health systems.
- Mission: Catalyze or Contribute to a Premier Health Learning and Collective Impact Collaborative Network in the World over the next 20 Years.
- Simple rules: be nice, accountable, bold, relentless, view everything with a CST lens, strengthen the network long-term.
Jazz and Complexity
I’m reading “Aid on the Edge of Chaos.” Highly Recommended. Ben Ramalingam quotes Barrett on the “seven features of jazz improvisation that also hold true for improvisation within organizational structures” (page 189):
- Provocative competence: deliberate efforts to interrupt habit patterns.
- Embracing errors as a source of learning.
- Shared orientation toward minimal structures that allow maximum flexibility.
- Distributed task: continual negotiation and dialogue towards dynamic synchronization
- Reliance on retrospective sense making
- “Hanging out”: membership a community of practice
- Taking turns soloing and supporting
